Ripton, VT – 1/7/25 – The Rikert Outdoor Center is proud to announce the launch of its Adaptive Bike Days, a groundbreaking program designed to make winter outdoor activities more accessible to individuals with mobility challenges. Starting December and running through March, this initiative underscores Rikert’s commitment to inclusivity, empowerment, and the joy of outdoor recreation for everyone.

The program will take place every Wednesday from 10 AM to 12 PM, offering participants the chance to experience Vermont’s winter wonderland on specially designed adaptive bikes. Hosted at Rikert’s scenic outdoor center in Ripton, this initiative invites individuals to reconnect with nature, enjoy fresh air, and find camaraderie—all in a supportive and welcoming environment.

“Outdoor recreation is a cornerstone of Vermont’s identity, and we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to share in that experience,” says Jane Moulton, Program Coordinator at Rikert Outdoor Center. “With Adaptive Bike Days, we aim to remove barriers and open the door to meaningful and memorable winter adventures.”

Key Details of the Adaptive Bike Days Program:

  • Who: Designed for individuals with mobility challenges
  • When: Every Wednesday, December through March (weather permitting)
  • Time: 10 AM to 12 PM
  • Where: Rikert Outdoor Center, 106 College Cross Road, Ripton, VT
  • Cost: Free of charge
  • What to Bring: A helmet and a friend to ride with. Participants can also bring their own trike or bike with tires 4.0 or larger.

Participants will also receive expert support from adaptive biking specialist Anja Wrede of RAD-Innovations, based in Cornwall, VT, alongside other volunteers from the Rikert team and RAD. With years of experience in designing and fitting adaptive cycling equipment, Anja ensures that every participant is matched with the right bike for their needs, promoting both comfort and confidence on the trails. Whether you’re completely new to adaptive biking or seeking advice on optimizing your current setup, Anja and the volunteer team are dedicated to creating a personalized, empowering experience tailored to individual abilities and preferences.

Each session is designed to accommodate 2-4 riders, though more participants are welcome if they bring their own adaptive trikes or bikes with tires 4.0 or larger. Riders will begin by acclimating to the equipment in Rikert’s stadium oval—a safe and supportive space ideal for building confidence. For some, this may serve as the perfect setting for their entire session. Others, depending on their abilities and snow conditions, may explore Rikert’s short Battell Trail or even venture onto longer trails if accompanied by a friend familiar with the routes.

The program’s flexible approach ensures that every participant’s experience is tailored to their comfort level and needs, offering a supportive and fun environment for winter outdoor exploration. To schedule a visit or fitting, contact Anja directly at 802-382-0093 or via email at anja@rad-innovations.com.

New Grooming Alert & Afternoon Race Notice

We’re excited to share that Myhre’s Driveway was pushed out this morning! To allow the snow to dry fully, grooming of this new section is delayed until 9:00 AM. If you plan to ski First Loop this morning, please return the same way you did yesterday until grooming is complete.

We’ll also be freshening up the fields throughout the day as we enjoy a few new flakes gracing our trails.

Afternoon Race Notice:
We’re hosting the MUHS Solstice Sprint from 2:15 PM to 4:30 PM today. During this time, First Loop will be very busy or temporarily closed. Please plan to ski outside the race surface or spectate on foot from designated areas.

General Updates:

  • Snowmaking efforts have been very productive this season, and this past weekend’s push yielded excellent results.
  • Snow pinned down in the fields over the past week has become granular, and we continue capturing windblown snow to refresh natural surfaces.

Please be aware that some sections are fast and even a bit noisy underfoot. Stay alert and ready for a fun adventure!

See you on the trails!

Trails will be closed today to preserve our surface. 12/11

Summer Projects – Trail Work – 2024

As the vibrant colors of fall start to appear—especially in our wetlands—we’re excited to share updates on the significant trail improvements made this summer at Rikert Outdoor Center.

One major development is the thoughtful widening of the Tormondsen Family Race Course, a key feature of our venue. These enhancements were made to meet the standards for FIS Homologation. But what exactly does that mean?

FIS Homologation is an official certification process by the International Ski Federation (FIS) that ensures a venue’s race trails meet the requirements for hosting international competitions. For Rikert, this means our trails are now recognized as a competitive venue capable of hosting high-level races, further cementing our reputation in the world of Nordic skiing. Additionally, the widening of the course will allow us to optimize snowmaking production this winter, ensuring a reliable snow base for training and races.

Beyond the race trails, our entire network of trails has been meticulously maintained. We’ve cleared fallen trees, mowed grassy areas, and made critical adjustments to keep the trails in peak condition for the 2024-2025 ski season.

Whether you’re a casual skier or an elite athlete, these updates ensure that Rikert Outdoor Center remains a top-notch destination for winter recreation and competitive Nordic skiing alike.

Stay tuned for more updates as we get ready for another fantastic season on the snow!
